Part of the “Painted Churches of Northern Moldova” ensemble, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, the monastery impresses with its exterior painting and its history closely linked to the era of Petru Rareș.

The origins of the monastery

The first mentions of a monastic settlement in Humor date back to 1415, during the reign of Alexander the Good. However, that old monastery was destroyed over time, and only ruins remained of the original construction.

The current church of the Humor Monastery was built in 1530, during the reign of Petru Rareș, son of Stephen the Great. The founders of the church were the great orator Toader Bubuiog and his wife, Anastasia. The new construction was dedicated to the “Assumption of the Virgin Mary”.

Architecture

The Humor Monastery Church is built in Moldavian style, combining Byzantine elements with Gothic influences. One of its peculiarities is the lack of a steeple above the nave, an unusual element for Moldavian churches of the time.

An open, spacious and elegant porch harmoniously completes the construction. The bell tower, built in 1641 by Vasile Lupu, is located separately from the church and adds an extra monumentality to the ensemble.

Interior and exterior painting

The church painting was made in 1535, being attributed to the painter Toma from Suceava. The exterior frescoes are notable for the richness of the scenes and the chromatics dominated by shades of red-brown, which is why they are sometimes referred to as the “Red of Humor”.

Among the most important scenes depicted on the exterior facades are:

“The Last Judgment”

“The Akathist Hymn”

“Siege of Constantinople”

“The Tree of Jesse”

The painting from Humor reflects both Byzantine tradition and Western influences, being considered one of the most valuable achievements of Romanian medieval art.

Periods of decline and restoration

In 1783, after the annexation of Bukovina by the Habsburg Empire, the monastery was dissolved and the monks were expelled. The place became a parish church for the local community.

Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, the monument underwent several restoration works, aimed at preserving the painting and the structure of the building.

In 1991, Humor Monastery was re-established as a nunnery, resuming its monastic activity.

UNESCO Heritage

Humor Monastery is part of the group “Painted Churches of Northern Moldova”, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List due to their exceptional artistic and historical value.

This international recognition confirms the importance of the monument in the universal cultural heritage and contributes to its protection and promotion.

The Legacy of Humor Monastery

The Humor Monastery represents a symbol of the era of Petru Rareș and the development of religious art in 16th-century Moldova. Through its expressive painting, balanced architecture and turbulent history, Humorul remains one of the most important testimonies of Romanian medieval spirituality and culture.

Today, the monastery is an important tourist attraction and a place of pilgrimage, keeping alive the tradition and faith of over five centuries.

Location and access

Eridor Chalet is located in an accessible area and well connected to the main tourist attractions in Bucovina. The property is about 14.1 km from Humor Monastery, one of the most valuable medieval monuments in northern Moldova.

The distance allows for a quick drive to the monastery and the town of Gura Humorului, offering tourists the opportunity to combine relaxation with visiting cultural attractions in the area.

Humor Monastery History, art and spirituality in the heart of Bukovina Located in the city of Gura Humorului, Suceava County, Humor Monastery is one of the most valuable medieval monuments in northern Moldova.
